Alger Distinguished American recipient in 1992, Tom
Harken suffered debilitating polio as a child, was a
junior-high drop-out, remained unable to read even after
his own children were reading, and spent years peddling
vacuum cleaners door-to-door. Refusing to ever give
up, Harken persisted, creating three thriving businesses,
the last of which is a successful restaurant chain with
more than 600 employees.
Harken has
devoted the last decade to encouraging children and
adults to fight against illiteracy, complete their education,
excel toward their highest dreams, and develop business
savvy that endures through all transition and shifts
in the marketplace.
